Wood types for railings
At Apex Carpentry we use a variety of woods for our stairs and stair railings. We work with you to select the best wood for your home. There are many things to consider when select the type of wood to use. Each species has its own advantages and disadvantages. We take into consideration the durability, grain pattern, color and cost when designing your stair railing.
Clear alder
Clear alder is very atractive and can be stained a variety of colors. It is one of the softest woods.
Knotty alder
Knotty alder is very rustic and has a unique charm to it. It is also the lowest cost hardwood for railings.
Maple
Maple is a light colored wood that is strong and has a fine grain pattern. It looks good with a natural finish or can be stained dark.
Red oak
Red oak is the most common wood used over the last century. It is strong has a good price and a unique grain pattern.
Hickory
Hickory is a very hard and durable wood. In its natural state it has a rustic look with light and dark colors. When its stained the color becomes uniform and is one of the most atractive woods.
White oak
White oak is harder than red oak and has a lighter color is very popular in shaker and mission style designs.
Walnut
Walnut is the darkest common wood available. It has a rich texture that is hard to beat. It is one of the most expensive woods.
Cherry
Cherry has a natural red tint and a fine pleasing grain. It stains very well and is a classic for furniture and stairs.
Ash
Ash is similar to oak but the grain is less pronounced. It is what baseball bats are made of.
